For tired city people

Traffic, PM2.5, construction noise: leave it all in Bangkok

Here the day starts with birdsong and a thin mist over the hills, not with horns and an air-quality alert.

Mountain air instead of dust readings

Phu Sawan sits on the edge of the Tenasserim Hills next to Kaeng Krachan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage forest. Cool breezes, clean air and real stars at night.

Close enough for every weekend

About 150 km from Bangkok via Phetkasem Road. Leave Friday evening and you are home for dinner. Hua Hin and Cha-am beaches are roughly an hour away.

3,588 m² that are yours

A pond, a bamboo grove, palms and enough open ground to grow vegetables, keep chickens, dig a second pond or build a guest house for the parents.

A house nobody can build new

Solid wood throughout, stained glass, wooden doors, massive round posts and old patterned floor tiles. This atmosphere takes years and heart to collect.

The story

A house called “Ton Thuean”

The wooden sign over the entrance reads “Ton Thuean”, roughly “the untamed self”. It says what this place is for: nobody to impress, shorts on, barefoot on cool tiles, a seat at the wooden bar and the wind chimes doing the talking.

The ground floor is open on all sides in the style of a raised Thai house: a lounge, a long dining table and a bar counter cut from a single plank. Upstairs are wooden bedrooms and a walkway running around the house, looking down into a double-height hall where morning light falls through green, amber and blue glass.

Everything here, from the wooden double doors and the round timber posts to the carved elephant panel above the corridor, was chosen and collected piece by piece. This is not a housing-estate build finished in six months.

The wooden bar at night with glass lamps, wind chimes and a bonsai

The house

Two storeys of wood, open, airy and cool

Hardwood throughout on round timber posts. The ground floor is open to the breeze, upstairs are the bedrooms and a wrap-around walkway.

Ground-floor lounge looking out to the garden and pond

A wide open hall for a dozen guests

The open ground floor is tiled in old-style floral tiles, furnished with carved wooden sofas and daybeds. A natural breeze moves through it all day.

The single-plank bar at night

A single-plank bar for Friday evenings

A long wooden counter with bar stools, glass lamps, wind chimes and bonsai: the fastest place in the house to forget about work.

Dining table under the arched stained-glass windows

Double-height hall with arched stained glass

The central hall rises to the roof. Arched windows in coloured glass, in the manner of old Thai houses, light the long dining table beneath.

Wooden double doors at the entrance

Wooden doors

Solid wooden double doors at the entrance with Thai fretwork above, a polished floor and old-style wall lanterns.

Upstairs walkway

Upstairs: wooden bedrooms and a walkway

Bedrooms panelled entirely in wood, turned-wood balustrades and a walkway around the house overlooking the garden and the pond.

Corridor to the rooms with exposed brick wall

A corridor of rooms with exposed brick

Several rooms lined up along a corridor, all with wooden doors, an exposed-brick wall with a painting and a carved elephant panel above the entrance.

Shrine room

A separate shrine room

A quiet Buddha room with polished tiles, set apart from the living areas, for families to whom this matters.

Antique patterned glass in green, amber and blue

Details you cannot buy any more

Antique patterned glass in green, amber and blue, wooden window shutters, old frames and collected objects that tell the story of the house.

Wooden swing seat beside the pond with hills in the distance
